Автором предпринимается попытка понимания природы и причин первичной неудачи развития эго и возникающих в связи с этим терапевтических затруднений при лечении шизоидных пациентов. По мнению Гарри Гантрипа, возрождение и повторный рост утраченной живой основы личности становится основной проблемой психотерапии, потому что психотерапевты имеют дело с людьми, которые, сколь бы тщательно они ни обучались взрослым социальным и моральным обязательствам и ценностям на сознательном уровне их личности, не способны удерживаться на этом уровне, потому что лежащие в основе бессознательные пласты их личностей находятся на доморальном уровне инфантильного страха, эго-слабости и бегства от жизни.
